Day 1: Yangon Arrival

Mingalabar and welcome to Myanmar. Your 10 day Myanmar Culinary Adventure commences in Yangon, the former capital. An introductory walking tour will get your taste buds watering as you walk through the streets of vibrant downtown visiting markets, Little India and Chinatown. Your guide will explain the various exotic fruits and vegetables on sale and buy lots of snacks for you to sample. An evening meal will introduce you to foods from Myanmar’s more remote areas- a mix of unique flavours and textures from around the country.

Day 2: Yangon Street Food Tasting

Again today we hit the streets to discover the wonderful street foods of Yangon. Thanks to its diverse population, you’ll taste influences from neighboring countries as well as further away. You will also be treated to your first curry meal, a staple of the Myanmar diet, and a tea shop visit where you will rub shoulders with the locals. An afternoon of sightseeing takes in Yangon’s most important sites, concluding with a sunset visit to the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda.

Day 3: Yangon – Bagan

Today head north to Bagan, home to more than 4000 religious monuments built between the 9th and 14th centuries. Spend the day exploring the villages and temples, including highlights such as Ananda, Shwesandaw and Shwezigon. An afternoon boat trip takes you up to an unusual cave temple, Kyauk Gu U Min. When on the Ayeyarwaddy River you will see the importance the river plays in the lives of Bagan’s people, providing sustenance, enabling transport and serving as a vital water source.

Day 4: Cooking Class at a Local House

We delve back in to the local food scene this morning starting with a visit to a vibrant market. Then we travel to a house in a nearby neighbourhood where you partake in a fun, hands-on cooking course. Alongside your friendly host, prepare a traditional lunch using locally-sourced ingredients and then enjoy the fruits of your labour at midday. This afternoon venture to the outskirts of Bagan to see the production of toddy juice in to items such as alcohol, sugar and molasses. Return back to the temple planes in the late afternoon for a relaxing horse cart ride to a sunset viewing location.

Day 5: Bagan – Mandalay – Amarapura

Fly to Mandalay, a city renowned throughout Myanmar as having the best tea shops and local food. After a filling tea shop breakfast, head to the top of Mandalay Hill for fantastic views of the sprawling city and then explore some of the well-known monuments such as Kuthodaw Pagoda and Shwenandaw Kyaung. Tuck in to fresh curry at lunch before continuing to the south of the city to see traditional handicrafts and the famed Mahamuni Buddha image. Your day comes to a close as you watch the sun set at the 1.2 km teak U Bein Bridge followed by dinner at a popular local barbeque.

Day 6: Tea Shop Tour in Mandalay – Sagaing

Hope you are hungry this morning! We set off on local trishaw to discover the secrets behind some of Mandalay’s most beloved foods. A local food enthusiast shares his neighbourhood’s best tea shops, markets and food stalls with you and, of course, you’ll sample lots of treats en route. The afternoon is filled with a visit to Sagaing, the Buddhist centre of Myanmar. You’ll visit some of the more famous pagodas and enjoy spectacular views from the top of Sagaing Hill before returning back to the eastern side of the river.

Day 7: Mandalay – Heho – Inle Lake

Our last stop on this culinary adventure is Inle Lake. This morning will be spent in the town of Nyaung Shwe, a hub for trade and distribution of the fresh produce grown on the lake. Indulge in a gourmet meal of Shan, the region of Inle Lake, delights and then board a long-tailed wooden boat to cruise out on to the lake itself. Observe the daily activities of the local leg-rowing fishermen and see their ‘floating gardens’ as you make your way to your lakeside hotel.

Day 8: Inle Lake

Spend this day traveling by boat around Inle Lake, taking in the many sights and sounds. Depending on the day, you may catch the lively morning market and see hill tribes from the region converge to buy and sell produce. You will visit the main attractions such as the Nge Hpe Chaung and Phaung Daw Oo Monasteries interspersed with stops in local villages and handicraft workshops. Be sure to have your camera charged as it is a very photo-worthy day!

Day 9: Inle Lake – Indein

Today venture further away from the main part of Inle Lake with an excursion to Indein, a stupa-covered hills on the southwest of the lakeshores. A short trek will lead you to a local village followed by a visit to an Inthar family house. The Inthar are the lake’s indigenous people and live in stilted houses on the water. You’ll have the unique opportunity to prepare a meal in a family kitchen before returning to the main part of the lake and back to your hotel.

Day 10: Inle Lake – Heho – Yangon Departure

You’ll return to Yangon this morning by flight and have the day free at leisure until your onward international departure.
